Zeolite
Clinoptilolite
Also known as: Natural Zeolite, Clinoptilolite Zeolite
Overview
A natural volcanic mineral (clinoptilolite) whose cage-like crystalline structure binds positively charged metal ions by ion exchange. In one placebo-controlled trial, a purified form reduced absorption of lead swallowed alongside it. It has not been shown to remove metals already stored in the body.
Proposed mechanism
Negatively charged silica-alumina framework attracts and traps cationic heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium) through ion exchange. The mineral particles are not absorbed into the bloodstream, so this binding happens inside the digestive tract: in a randomized placebo-controlled trial, clinoptilolite taken at the same time as lead substantially reduced how much of that lead was absorbed, and the metal-loaded mineral is understood to leave the body in stool rather than by way of the kidneys.
Mechanisms describe how researchers think a compound may act, often from laboratory work — a proposed mechanism is not proof of a clinical effect in people.
