Activated Charcoal
Carbo activatus
Also known as: Active Carbon, Activated Carbon
Overview
Processed carbon with an enormous surface area (1g = 3,000 m²) that adsorbs toxins, heavy metals, and chemicals in the GI tract before systemic absorption.
Proposed mechanism
Porous carbon lattice adsorbs toxins via Van der Waals forces. Binds heavy metals, mycotoxins, endotoxins, and dietary chemicals in the gut lumen for fecal elimination.
Mechanisms describe how researchers think a compound may act, often from laboratory work — a proposed mechanism is not proof of a clinical effect in people.
