Skullcap

Scutellaria lateriflora

Also known as: Blue Skullcap, American Skullcap, Helmet Flower

Overview

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), a North American herb traditionally used as a calming "nervine." Human research is still early and limited: small trials point to possible benefits for mood and sleep quality, while effects on anxiety itself have not been consistently demonstrated. Its antioxidant activity in nerve tissue has been observed only in laboratory and animal studies, and has not been tested in people.

Proposed mechanism

In laboratory studies, two flavonoids present in skullcap — baicalein and, with much weaker affinity, baicalin — bind to the benzodiazepine site of the GABA-A receptor; both also show antioxidant activity in cell and animal research. This binding is the proposed explanation for skullcap's traditional use for anxiety, but it has not been confirmed in people: in the largest human trial to measure anxiety, American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) did not lower anxiety scores significantly more than placebo, though it did improve overall mood.

Mechanisms describe how researchers think a compound may act, often from laboratory work — a proposed mechanism is not proof of a clinical effect in people.
