Nettle Root

Urtica dioica (root)

Also known as: Stinging Nettle Root

Overview

The root extract (distinct from the leaf) acts on SHBG to free bound testosterone, making more bioavailable free testosterone available to tissues.

Proposed mechanism

Polysaccharides and lectins in nettle root bind to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), preventing SHBG from binding testosterone. Also inhibits 5-alpha-reductase and aromatase.

Mechanisms describe how researchers think a compound may act, often from laboratory work — a proposed mechanism is not proof of a clinical effect in people.
