Taurine

2-aminoethanesulfonic acid

Also known as: Taurine

Overview

A conditionally essential amino acid found in high concentrations in the brain, heart, and retina. Critical for bile salt conjugation, calcium signaling, and neuromodulation.

Proposed mechanism

Acts as an inhibitory neuromodulator at glycine and GABA-A receptors. Stabilizes cardiac cell membranes. Conjugates with bile acids for fat digestion. Protects mitochondria from oxidative stress.

Mechanisms describe how researchers think a compound may act, often from laboratory work — a proposed mechanism is not proof of a clinical effect in people.
